Karen A Maguire

Mrs Maguire is an assistant professor of accounting at Coastal Carolina University. She earned a Ph.D. in accounting from Univ of Alabama , a master’s from Boston College and a bachelor’s degree from the American University in Washington, DC, She has more than 10 years experience in industry with such firms as American Healthcare Inc, Decision Analysts, Inc, and Digital Equipment Corp. Mrs Maguire’s research focuses in the area if empirical fraud research.

Thomas (Tom) Sheaffer

Tom Sheaffer is a Senior Stakeholder Liaison with the Small Business / Self Employed division of the Internal Revenue Service.  Currently Tom is the Senior Stakeholder Liaison, including practitioner liaison, in South Carolina.  He has been with the IRS for 13 years as an Area Manager, a Senior Tax Specialist, and Senior Tax Analyst.  Tom is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with degrees in Management and Economics, and has both a Master in Business Administration and a Master in Accounting with a concentration in Taxation from Strayer University.  Tom is an Adjunct Instructor at Greenville Technical College teaching Individual Tax Law and Accounting in the Business Department.  Tom also has 25 years of experience in the restaurant industry as a general manager, district manager, and director of operations.

Gregory Thornburg, Vice President for Enrollment Services, Coastal Carolina University

Gregory Thornburg has worked in enrollment services for 30 years.  He is currently Vice President for Enrollment Services at Coastal Carolina University.  Thornburg arrived to CCU in 2010 originally as Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships.  He is the former Dean of Enrollment Services at Arkansas State University where he was from 1998 to 2008.  He has also worked with two private colleges, two Tennessee community colleges, and as a higher education consultant.  He holds a master’s degree from the University of Memphis and a baccalaureate degree from Johnson University.

Dawn Hitchcock, Interim Co-Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships, Coastal Carolina University

Dawn Hitchcock has worked with Coastal Carolina University for 18 years.  She began as a Computer Programmer/Analyst who served several areas on campus but eventually migrated to Financial Aid and Scholarships.  Hitchcock has served as Sr. Associate Director of Systems & Operations for many years and is currently serving as Interim Co-Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships.

Melissa Clark

Melissa Clark joined the Wall College of Business as an Associate Professor of Marketing in 2013. She previously worked as at The University of North Alabama. Her Ph.D. in Marketing (2007) is from The University of Mississippi; her MBA (2003) and BBA (1999) are both from The University of North Alabama. Her research interests are in social media, relationship marketing and pharmaceutical marketing. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in social media, retailing management and basic marketing. She has taught courses in healthcare marketing, marketing research, integrated marketing communications, advertising and promotion, personal selling and numerous special topics courses. She is a member of the American Marketing Association and the Society for Marketing Advances. She is an active board member of Girls on the Run of the Grand Strand and involved with the marketing committee for the Grand Strand Running Club. She lives with her husband, Stuart, a golf instructor, and their two children, Jackson (7) and Kate (5), in Pawleys Island. She enjoys running, biking and yoga.

Marshall Smith

Marshall Smith is a lifelong resident of South Carolina.   He has been with SC Department of Revenue for over 25 years; a career which includes time spent in field services, law & compliance and field operations divisions.  He’s also audited various types of accounts throughout his career.  Now, Marshall serves as the Field Operations Training Coordinator.  His responsibilities include developing and instructing training classes for field audit employees and taxpayers across the state.

Mitch Campbell

Mitch Campbell is a lifelong resident of South Carolina. He has been with the SC Department of Revenue for over 26 years; a career which includes 18 years as a Revenue Officer, 5 years as Collections Supervisor, and 3  and a half years as the Lower State Regional Manager. His current responsibilities  include overseeing tax collections of the  SC Department of Revenue Offices in Beaufort, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach.

Perry Mathis

Perry Mathis is a Collections Manager with the Taxpayer & Business Services division of the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR).  He has been with the SCDOR for over 17 years working as a Revenue Officer, Collections Supervisor and now to his current position.  Perry and his staff work complex collections issues and interact with taxpayers, tax professionals, associations, and other government entities across South Carolina.

Lee D. Martin

Lee D. Martin is the Deputy Director, Office of Professional Responsibility. Prior to this Lee was the Director, Enterprise Networks Operations in the Information Technology organization. In this role, Lee was responsible for providing executive leadership over the operations and maintenance of the enterprise network infrastructure, while working closely with IT executives to ensure delivery of a world-class converged network and high quality services. Prior to joining the IRS, Lee held management positions with AT&T as Assistant Vice President-Project Management; Vice President-Information Systems/Chief Technologist of SBC Interactive – SmartPages.com, an on-line Directory Service and Regional VP – Frame/ATM Provisioning Service Operations responsible for Ordering, Design, Provisioning, Maintenance and Repair of high-speed Data Services across SBC’s territory. Lee also has an extensive background in Billing and Collections with SBC where he played a key strategic role at TelCel in Mexico City and Cable Northwest in Preston, England.

Lee has an MBA from Webster University in St. Louis and a BS degree with dual majors in Math and Chemistry from Friends University. He is a Certified Project Management Professional and Six Sigma Green Belt. Lee was a recipient of the 2006 AT&T Excellence in Project Management Achievement Award for Leadership. Lee has received two NOVA Achievement Awards from Southwestern Bell for innovations to the business. Lee is married and has two children. Lee resides in Virginia.

Bob Thomas

Bob Thomas has a Bachelor’s Degree from Erskine College and a Law Degree from the University of South Carolina Law School. He has been a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar since 1991. Bob began working at the South Carolina Department of Revenue in 1997, and was involved in Video Poker, Alcohol and Beverage Licensing, and Estate Tax. From 2000 to 2014, he was a Tax Analyst in the Department’s Research & Forms Development Section, serving as the Individual Income Tax Analyst for eight years and the Corporate Tax Analyst for six years. His primary responsibilities were designing forms, answering technical questions, and providing training inside and outside of the Department, related to Individual and Corporate Income Tax, Withholding Tax, and Tax Credits.  Since 2014, he has been a Revenue Law Advisor, specializing primarily in Sales and Use Taxes. He and his wife Kathy, have three sons, one daughter-in-law, and three grandsons.

Marshall Smith is a long-time resident of South Carolina.   He has been with the SC Department of Revenue for over 28 years; a career which includes time spent in field services, law & compliance and field operations divisions. He has audited various tax types over the years.
Marshall now works as the Field Operations Training Coordinator.  His responsibilities include developing and instructing internal training classes and OJT.

Aaron Scheuer

Aaron Scheuer joined the Department of Revenue’s Policy Section in 2014 as a Revenue Law Advisor, focusing primarily on income taxation of individuals and business entities and property taxation.  Prior to joining Policy, Aaron spent two years as a litigation attorney for the Department, representing the Department in a variety of tax and regulatory cases.  Aaron earned his LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center in 2012, J.D. from the Charleston School of Law in 2011, and B.A. from the University of Virginia in 2005.  Aaron has been a member of the South Carolina Bar since November 2011.  A native of Camden, South Carolina, Aaron enjoys the outdoors, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.

Don Dean

Don has supported individual and corporate clients as a CPA for more than 40 years and as a registered representative for 18 years. Don has his BSIR and MBA from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

He began his career at Haskin & Sells in 1974 and was a partner at Deloitte Haskins & Sells from 1985-1990. In 1996, Don joined the financial services sector and he holds FINRA licenses 6, 7, 63, 65 and 24.

Don has been leading the sales, recruiting and education at Capital Investment Companies since 2006 and has aided in substantial growth at the company in that time. Don also serves as the head of Strategic Partner Relations at the company.

Don is a nationally published author, speaker, and a thought leader in the accounting and finance communities. His guidance has been sought out by the Journal of Accountancy, Hartford Business Journal, and statewide CPA magazines in Connecticut, Georgia and North Carolina. Don is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), NC Association of CPAs (NCACPA) and the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA).

Shelli Huston, CPA, MS

Shelli Huston, CPA, MS is an Oregon native. She attended Warner Pacific College where she received a Bachelors in Business with an Emphasis in Accounting. After obtaining her CPA’s license, she continued on to Golden Gate University where she received her Master’s Degree in Taxation.

Shelli worked in a small tax firm for many years. In 2006, she opened up her own tax and accounting firm. She has watched her business grow and expand to include teaching and writing. Shelli has over 20 years of experience in personal, business, estate, trust, and gift taxation, as well as QuickBooks and payroll. She enjoys working with clients of all types and small businesses, especially new businesses.

Shelli is passionate about the importance of being the best professionals we can be. This profession comes with an inherent integrity that takes work to uphold. Through her participation in education, she is excited to assist in upholding the professionalism of the accounting and tax profession.
